What is DRaaS?
The major causes of IT downtime are operational failures, such as the following:
- Power interruption
- Network disruption
- Hardware faults
- Software faults
As IT failures have doubled for UK banks in the past year, causing millions of pounds worth of loss, now more than ever is it crucial to have a DR plan.
DRaaS – ‘DR on Tap’
When delivered ‘as a Service’, you can rapidly replicate critical portions of your IT infrastructure — or even your entire IT environment — to another location. With multiple replication target host sites, it ensures geographic diversity.
With Disaster Recovery as a Service, the time to return applications to production is reduced because the data does not need to be restored over the internet. The service can be especially useful for small and medium-sized businesses that lack the necessary expertise to provision, configure and test an effective disaster recovery plan. Using DRaaS also means your organisation doesn’t have to invest in -and maintain – its own off-site DR environment.
Why it’s not BaaS
DRaaS is not to be confused with Back Up as a Service (BaaS). Unlike BaaS, where file data needs to be restored, DRaaS allows you to failover and spin up your infrastructure in the target location very quickly. Depending on requirements and specifications your critical systems can be up and running in seconds or minutes.
The greatest benefit of DRaaS is that it fails over processing to the cloud so your business can continue to operate during a disaster. The failover notice can be automated or manual. The operation remains in effect until the IT team can repair the on-premises environment and issue a failback order.
Whereas, with backup as a service your organisation decides which files it will back up to the provider’s storage systems. Your organisation is also responsible for setting up its RPO and RTO service levels, as well as its backup windows.
A BaaS provider is only responsible for data consistency and restoring backed up copies of data.
