Blue Chip – helping create the Forest of Marston Vale

Forest of Marston Vale

We commissioned our Tier 4 Design data centre ten years ago. With climate change a growing topic of concern and the construction phase about to begin, we had in mind a few ways that could make our data centre one of the most efficient in the UK. This is where our relationship with the Forest of Marston Vale began.

Our aim was set – planting 2,000 trees for every rack that we manage. This number of trees would lock up the carbon emitted from each rack, making our operation carbon neutral. The impact it has had on the forest, with the help of both our customers and employees, is the planting of a total of 92,000 trees across 9 forests.

Bridging the gap between Bedford and Milton Keynes, the 61 square miles of woodland creates a green band between the two towns. However, this was not always the case. Before the charity stepped in, back in the early 1990s, Stewartby Brickworks and numerous landfill sites were a common sight in the area. The area had a mere 3% tree cover, a third of the national average at the time.

Why was it created?

The Forest of Marston Vale was established to make life better for the people and wildlife in the local area. It’s one of 12 Community Forests in the UK. Overall, the project has transformed the landscapes and improved the prospects of overly industrial areas, such as the Marston Vale.

What the charity has done so far

Since the Forest of Marston Vale workers put on their wellies and shovels, they have planted over 2 million trees in total. This fantastic achievement has made the area a better place to live, work and spend leisure time. Not only this, but the work they’ve done to create new woodlands and bring other into management has created jobs, brought millions in investment to the area.

The vision for the forest

The Forest of Marston Vale has a goal of 30% tree cover, but for the charity it’s about much more than that. They want the Forest to be a place defined by the trees and woodlands covering 30% of its 61 square miles – where communities, businesses and the environment thrive alongside each other, in a sustainable, balanced way. They want people to be proud to live, work and play in the Forest. That won’t change, but only grow, for the many generations to come.

How can you help

For the Forest of Marston Vale to reach their goal, another 5 million trees need to be planted. As an ecologically minded company, we are helping to ensure that this is achieved. You can help as an individual too.

When the Forest began, the charity received funding to keep things moving, but now they rely almost entirely on donations from companies, the public and money made at the Forest Centre and Millennium Country Park – their flagship site.

Fundraise, plant trees and tell everyone you know what has been done so far to improve the local area. Whether you live or work near the forest, or visit for fun, be a part of the expansion and future of the Forest of Marston Vale.
